Our Theory of Change

Sexually-liberating art for gender equity. Gender equity for planetary protection.

For centuries, our social, political and economic systems have been governed by the patriarchy, creating systems in which the rights and bodily autonomy of women and gender-diverse people have been controlled by men. Gender equity has never existed.

Capitalism is to Earth what patriarchy has been to women and gender-diverse people. As a profit and extraction-driven economic system, capitalism has been responsible for pillaging the planet. Capitalism is designed to keep wealth in the hands of the few—the colloquial 1%.

When capitalism became the prominent global economic system, men already held societal power. They became the 1%. White men were able to accumulate wealth when people of all other genders and races were not. In this way, capitalism accentuated the patriarchy along with white supremacy.

Why gender equity matters in the fight against climate change.

Mother Earth, women and gender-diverse people are oppressed by the same socioeconomic systems: patriarchy and capitalism. It’s no surprise, then, that empowering women and gender-diverse people could have such a massive positive effect on saving the planet. Even the United Nations recognizes that gender equity is key to a sustainable future.

Here’s why: · Women tend to have smaller carbon footprints than men [Kennedy et. al.]

· Women are most vulnerable to climate change and also have more environmentally-friendly attitudes [Arora-Jonsson] · Women have a greater interest in protecting the planet [Kennedy et. al.] · Studies have shown that women may be more effective global leaders, especially when it comes to climate change [Eagly et. al.]

From Greta Thunberg to Jacinda Ardern, Naomi Klein to Pattie Gonia, women and gender-diverse people are already proving to be effective climate leaders, organizing from the grassroots up.

More climate leaders could follow in their footsteps, but societal barriers still exist—barriers like the ongoing policing of women and gender-diverse people’s bodies and sexuality.

Sexual freedom for gender equity.

The bodies of women and gender-diverse people are still societally controlled. We see this in the repeal of Roe v Wade restricting access to abortion and contraception, while LGBTQIA+ rights are being repealed in state legislatures and classrooms. Gender-oppressed bodies are, quite literally, on the line.

That’s why sexual liberation and celebrating gender-affirming sexual expression is a key piece of the gender equity puzzle.

From sexual oppression to empowerment.

At Green Girls Common, we transmute sexual oppression into sexual empowerment. We’re taking back our bodily autonomy and celebrating our sexuality, in all of its forms.

Our community opens an artistic door for women and gender-diverse to rise up and take up the space they deserve—for ourselves, and for the planet.

Green Girls Common is igniting a sexually fierce climate movement. Will you join us?
